Togean Islands · Central Sulawesi · Indonesia
A pristine island paradise lost in the turquoise heart of the Coral Triangle — where time moves with the tides.
About the Kadidiri Island
Kadidiri Island is a small, breathtaking island within the Togean Islands National Park, nestled in Tomini Bay, Tojo Una-Una district, Central Sulawesi. It sits within the world-renowned Coral Triangle — an area recognized as having the highest marine biodiversity on Earth.
With white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush jungle interior, Kadidiri represents the Indonesia that most travelers only dream of. The Togean archipelago consists of 56 nearly-uninhabited islands that have preserved a rare natural elegance, largely untouched by modern tourism.
In 2008, a new species of bird was discovered here — living proof of this island's extraordinarily well-preserved ecosystem. Kadidiri is also home to the giant Coconut Crab, the world's largest land arthropod, with leg spans reaching up to 90 cm.
Things to Do
Explore legendary dive sites: The Gap, Dominik Rock, The Crack, Batugilla, and the WWII B-24 Bomber wreck. Night dives at Little Lembeh offer nudibranchs, seahorses, and frogfish.
Snorkel from the beach or the 78-metre jetty. Eagle rays, Napoleon fish, Bumphead Parrotfish, and reef sharks are regular sightings just metres from shore.
Adventure
Rent a sea kayak or charter a local boat to explore uninhabited islets, pristine sandbars, and mangrove channels of the 56-island Togean archipelago.
Over 200 marine species surround Kadidiri. Encounter giant barracudas, schools of jackfish, Napoleon wrasse, reef sharks, and vibrant coral gardens teeming with tropical life.
Hike through dense rainforest trails. Spot rare Sulawesi hornbills and parrots by day. By night, search for the legendary giant Coconut Crab — the world's largest land arthropod.
Culture
Visit the indigenous Bajo sea gypsy community at Pulao Papan — a stilt village over the water. Buy fresh lobster directly from fishermen and support the local economy.
Getting There
Kadidiri is intentionally remote — that's what makes it special. Reaching it takes patience and a few days, but every step of the journey rewards you.
From Jakarta, Bali, or Makassar, fly to Gorontalo (direct from Makassar). Or fly into Ampana via Palu on Wings Air (~1 hr, ~Rp 400,000) from central Indonesia. From Manado: twice-weekly flight to Luwuk then 8 hrs bus to Ampana.
Ampana is your last stop before the islands. Withdraw cash here — there are no ATMs on any of the Togean islands. Spend a night at Oasis Hotel if needed, then head to the harbor at dawn.
Public ferry departs daily (except Friday) at 10:00 from Ampana, arriving Wakai in ~4–5 hrs (~Rp 40,000–50,000). Faster: speedboat Hercules at 09:00. The Tuna Tomini from Gorontalo is safe and maintained — avoid private small boats. Note: Tuna Tomini may close for maintenance in May.
From Wakai, Kadidiri is 1 hour by boat (~Rp 100,000). Booked at Kadidiri Paradise, Black Marlin, or Pondok Lestari? They send a free boat to collect you at Wakai pier. All three resorts sit within walking distance on Kadidiri's main beach.
Bring enough cash — no ATMs on any island. Schedules change with weather, add buffer days. Download offline maps in Ampana. Ferry: Ampana ➜ Wakai daily except Friday. Charter speedboat from Ampana: ~Rp 1.6 million (15 pax). Charter from Marissa: ~Rp 2.75 million (6 pax, 3 hrs). Best route: fly Makassar ➜ Gorontalo ➜ ferry to Wakai.
Nature & Wildlife
Kadidiri's ecology extends far beyond its spectacular reef. Above and below the waterline, life is abundant, rare, and remarkably untouched.
When to Visit
Kadidiri can be visited year-round thanks to its equatorial location. March to December offers the best diving and snorkeling, with excellent visibility and calm seas. Peak dry season is April to October.
Just 40 km from the equator — temperatures 27–33°C year-round. Water: 28–30°C. Visibility: up to 25–40 m. Tides minimal. Rainfall is light and warm even in the wet season.
